But the case is more complex than “Gemini’s” deceptively simple setup might suggest, and the title refers to more than just the zodiac tattoo on the back of Heather’s neck: Just how separate is the starlet’s true identity from the one the public adores? Just how close are Jill and Heather? And if the star actually met her soul mate, would the world allow her to indulge a lesbian relationship? Meanwhile, channeling the vibe of movies he discovered on VHS, complete with their neon-lit “Miami Vice”-like visuals and synthesizer-driven jazz scores, Katz shadows Jill as she pursues her own investigation, both to clear her name and to uncover the killer.Īt certain moments, she proves instinctually capable of evading cops (most notably a detective played by John Cho, whose faux-chummy attitude masks deeper suspicions), while at others, endearingly clumsy trying to mimic tricks seen in Hitchcockian thrillers (as when she blows her cover by not waiting until after confronting the other key suspects to assume her newly-blonde disguise). Playing with mirrors and sleek geometric patterns, DP Andrew Reed’s style has an almost European feel, alternating between meticulously choreographed Steadicam shots and chilly arm’s-length compositions (including a motorcycle chase framed from an impossibly far remove). From its opening palm-tree-lined drive, Katz succeeds in turning the iconic city upside-down and inside-out. Absorbing much of its production value from a series of stunning architectural locations - a mix of old Hollywood and newer, more modern structures - and carefully art directed in cool blues and golds, “Gemini” defies the sunny, almost tropical feel of so many Los Angeles movies. And besides, how could she possibly have anticipated the worst-case scenario awaiting her when she returns from a particularly noxious early-morning errand? There, lying in a pool of blood in Heather’s hallways, is the star’s body, shot through five times with a gun that, suspiciously enough, belongs to Jill.Īnd so the tone shifts ever so gracefully from a “Mulholland Drive”-style study of these two Tinseltown doubles to a more “Night Moves”-like genre-movie homage. Still, protective as she is, Jill can’t necessarily be there to shoulder all of Heather’s troubles. Ditto when an overzealous paparazzo starts asking personal questions about the celeb’s recent breakup, insinuating that the relationship between star and assistant runs far deeper than fans realize (as it actually does for so many stars). When an intense young fan with an uncanny resemblance to Heather approaches them at the diner, it’s Jill’s job to shield her boss. Like a bodyguard, surrogate sister, and personal servant in one, Jill does her job without complaint. Compared to Kirke, Kravitz (appropriately) comes across more aloof and ethereal, and slightly fragile to boot.įaced with the prospect of telling a director (Nelson Franklin) that she’s bailing on his project, Heather asks Jill to do her dirty work. She has an uncanny way of just being on screen, which is the perfect state for her character, Jill LeBeau, unseen shadow to a young movie star named Heather Anderson (Zoë Kravitz). The film’s sly refinement isn’t so immediately apparent, as “Gemini” begins quite casually in the suburbs of L.A., idling in the car with Lola Kirke, an actress who - like “Mistress America” co-star Greta Gerwig - doesn’t seem like an actress at all. Despite having been made on modest means (and produced by Adele Romanski, the patron saint of “Moonlight,” among others), “Gemini” is every bit as elegant and stylish as French director Olivier Assayas’ last two movies, “Clouds of Sils Maria” and “Personal Shopper” - and could conceivably do similar business. A few years back, indie director Aaron Katz moved to Los Angeles from Portland, Ore., synthesizing his impressions into the gleaming blue sapphire that is “Gemini,” a subtle, sophisticated neo-noir focused on the odd co-dependent relationship between a starlet and her personal assistant - and how that dynamic is tested when one of them drops dead.Īlthough Katz unveiled “Gemini” at South by Southwest (the same film festival that effectively “discovered” him 11 years earlier with “Dance Party, USA”), this sleek and playful identity puzzler would have been right at home at Sundance (which screened his last, the Iceland-set “Land Ho!”) - or Cannes, for that matter. There’s an old saying that goes, “Nobody comes from Los Angeles.” Rather, the city is made up of millions of displaced souls who’ve found their way to Los Angeles from someplace else, which goes a long way to explain why no two filmmakers seem to view the city in the same way - because everyone, in some way, is an outsider there. ![]() Sources: FactSet, Tullett PrebonĬurrencies: Currency quotes are updated in real-time. People who lie repeatedly are not easy people to have in your life. Or if they have formed a destructive addictive habit which has caused them to lie excessively, you might once again be there to support them through admitting their problem and finding a way to address it.Įven if this person’s lying is a long-standing issue that developed in childhood, you can help them find a suitable professional psychotherapist to work with. If, for example, they have fallen into a depression and the lies started at the same time, you may be able to persuade them to see a doctor in order for them to find a suitable treatment. If their lying has arisen more recently and the cause is something you are aware of, try to encourage them to seek treatment for it. Help Them Seek Treatment For Any Underlying Causes They cannot keep secrets they’ve been told and like to gossip – because honesty is not a quality they care anything about, you are likely to hear a lot of details about other people – some of which will be personal secrets. Relationships break down, jobs are lost, and the pathological liar may find themselves moving between circles of friends and even different locations to find new unsuspecting victims to lie to.ġ0. They lead unstable lives that are often full of drama – as much as they may try to keep their lies hidden, most people eventually realize that something doesn’t add up. Yet they may get attention in two very different ways, which are covered in points 3 and 4.ħ. Their lies contribute to their attention-seeking behavior – if a person lies in order to direct the attention back toward themselves or it forms part of a more general need for attention, they could be a pathological liar. If they tell you how they dined with Tom Cruise or hold the world record for the number of chipolatas eaten in 60 seconds, it’s a big red flag.Ģ. Their stories are beyond belief -if you often find yourself shaking your head in disbelief at some of the claims being made, it’s more likely that you are dealing with a pathological liar (less so a compulsive liar). If you suspect someone of regularly lying to you, and you want to know whether they are doing so to conceal an indiscretion (which is not pathological because it is based on external motivation) or because this is simply how they function, look for some of the signs below.ġ. They may lie to escape the realities of their condition or to hide it from those around them. This does NOT mean that people with those conditions are pathological liars.īut if someone regularly lies due to a mental health issue, it may be down to underlying feelings of fear and shame surrounding that issue. Other mental health issues – people who lie pathologically may also be suffering from a mental illness such as depression, anxiety, or OCD. The same can be said about their shame and the desire to conceal their habit.ĥ. In these instances, the need to meet their addiction overrides their moral code when it comes to making decisions about what to say. Although there were plenty of kids on board and most seemed to be having a great time. 100% professional!!! I found the whole experience a little too focused on alcohol and drinking, which made it feel less appropriate for kids. Had a great time on the Jolly Roger Pirate Ship! The highlight was the Entertainment crew!!! WOW! Amazingly talented musicians, band, actors, acrobats, set and stage lighting/sound. On the way back to shore its a huge dance party! GREAT TIME! He’s just a poor boy from a poor family!” Ha- What a hoot! It was a laugh a minute! The show was great! The food was good, it wasn’t excellent but I didn’t expect that. There was a band that played until we set sail. All the pirates were in costume and all ready for pictures, talk with them, etc. I can wait to bring the grand kids they would love it! From the minute we were dropped off we were entertained. Well it was so dang much fun! WOW! I think this will be something that we will want to do every time we come back. We were not really sure what to expect, figured it would be fun and something to do. I can’t imagine how fun it would be with a group. After the show, dinner was served and then after that, dancing resumed on the main deck compliments of the wonderful band. I’m posting a couple pictures of pirates that I was able to capture. The dialogue was in both English and Spanish and lasted about an hour. After the band wrapped up the show began. He worked so hard refreshing drinks throughout the night and serving dinner later in the evening- really professional and fun guy. Our “personal pirate” was Rasta and he was incredible. Once we boarded the boat, we were seated and the show began with an amazing band that played everything from Latin to American classics. We arrived a little early so we had the chance to see the pirates milling around posing for pictures and always remaining in character. I’m not sure who was better the band (amazing!) or the cast of pirates (hilarious and rarely broke character). This show was so much fun and they immediately had the audience involved. ![]() I had low expectations- thought this would be a cheesy pirate show - similar to what you’d see at Disney. The tour dock back in port about 9:45pm, and our personal transportation arranged in our package was on site which allowed us to leave by 10pm. We actual sailed for about 2.5 to 3 hours in the sea, so if you get motion sickness there is a possibility. The show got the audience to participate as much as possible by engaging us to stand at our seats and dance, recognizing origin of countries represented in the audience, and 4-6 audience members will be recruited to be on stage. The meal was somewhat disappointing, so I would recommend not upgrading as it is an additional cost in which the value is poor. If were up to the food, I would have just rated it a 3 star, as we upgraded to a premium package for the meal choice, and the New York strip in the photo appeared to be at least a 1.5" cut of meat when in actuality it is a thin 1/4" cut. The show had a few surprises that I was not expecting which helps the rating into a 4 star experience. He would take our order and bring the drinks back in a timely manner. William Connor did an excellent job of seating us and ensuring that our group of about 15-16 enjoyed the open bar. The sound, light effects, and action were surprisingly good in such a confined space. The show itself was a simple story line of a trader trying to overtake the captain's command. The ships crew began the show before we boarded which helped make the wait pass more quickly. We boarded the ship around 6pm, but were entertained by the ships band in the garden area in front of the ship. The next step was to meet our personal pirate, William Connor. We had purchased our show from the resort, so we only needed to pay our dock fees ($12/person), declare the type of main course for dinner, and obtain our wrist band (wristband color indicator of which meal you have selected). ![]() We were immediately greeted by a pirate as we stepped out of our transportation, which he directed us straight to the ticket counter. Unfortunately, this musical goes out of its way to excuse the Phantom’s behavior. Beneath the surface, he’s just a lonely man who never learned how to be human - which is not an excuse, especially in this day and age. The thing about Gerard Butler’s Phantom is that his alpha-male sexuality is all an act, a mask even more flimsy than the one that covers half his face. That Phantom can get it.Įxcept no! No, he can’t! Once again I’ve tricked myself into believing the music over the actor behind the performance (and, to quote Movies in 15 Minutes, the Phantom’s fairly moderate Sunburn of Doom). His attempt at tenderness in “Music of the Night” is embarrassing in an endearing “aww, you tried” kind of way, but his magnetic and entirely too on-the-nose sexual draw in “The Point of No Return”? Hoo, mama. It’s that quality on which the entire attraction between Christine and the Phantom rests, and the only aspect of it Butler believably pulls off. The latter is the most effective, since his Phantom could charitably be described as animalistic. Butler speaks only 14 of his lines, sings the rest and does some truly formidable vocal somersaults to disguise his natural Scottish accent - alternately pitching his voice higher, speaking in a mealy-mouthed whisper, or straight-up growling. ![]() ![]() The Phantom is basically the worst, and Butler’s performance of the Phantom is … something, to say the least. (The less said about Raoul and Patrick Wilson’s terrible wig, the better.) Like any other lonely basement dweller, he believes he’s entitled to Christine’s love, that she’s the only one who can look past his disfigurement to see his true self or whatever, even though Christine is very clearly in love with someone else. He’s obsessed with a chorus girl named Christine, whose rise to prima donna he orchestrates through the humiliation of the Opera’s current star along with some seriously top-notch gaslighting. In late 19th-century Paris, a disfigured genius lives below the Paris Opera House and controls every aspect of its management through a combination of ordinary blackmail and stagecraft terrorism. The story of the Phantom is one that’s basically tailor-made for the Twilight (and, dare I say, Kylo Ren) generation. Let me jam to my ’80s rock opera in peace.)Īnd I really do love Gerard Butler’s Phantom. (I’ve heard complaints about the chandelier? Whatever. I love the over-the-top opulence and overwrought acting of the movie, and since I’ve never seen the stage version of the show, any changes made to the musical are changes I don’t care about. I consider Emmy Rossum my Christine Daaé, not Sarah Brightman. Yet the 2004 film soundtrack is my go-to Phantom. It would be pretty generous to call what Butler does in Phantom “singing.” The director of such cult classics as The Lost Boys and Batman and Robin, it’s not exactly as though Schumacher is known as an arbiter of taste or talent, which helps explain why Butler ended up with the role of the Phantom over the likes of John Travolta, Meat Loaf, Matthew McConaughey, Heath Ledger and Antonio Banderas. In a world where Michael Crawford and Ramin Karimloo exist, how can this possibly be the case? In a world where Joel Schumacher directed the movie version of the famed musical that came out when I was an impressionable teenager, that’s how. Mine, to my eternal shame, is Gerard Butler. Darcy, every Phanatic - that would be fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera, geddit? - has their preferred Phantom. Me? I’m a Macfadyen girl, which may give you some indication of where this essay is going. That’s but a small sampling of this Scottish export’s quarter-century run - whose body of work will be highlighted biweekly this month in a retrospective series.Įvery woman my age or a little older has their preferred Mr. Instinct tells us otherwise: People really love Gerard Butler.ĭisfigured catacomb vocalist. ![]() SEO tells us the piece’s popularity is thanks to its reference of one character’s inscrutable “Peckerwood” tattoo.
